The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Team are responsible for leading, coordinating and advising on all work health and safety matters to staff, students and visitors to maintain a safe and hazard free environment. Additionally, the Team provide advice and assistance to ensure the Institute’s ongoing compliance with relevant legislation, including the WHS Act 2011 and supporting regulations; implementation of a Health & Safety Management System, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor will be working with all levels of management and workers to implement the health & safety management system (HSMS) throughout Garvan. This role will be an active participant in the continuous improvement health & safety culture program working collaboratively with the broader WHS team and key stakeholders, based in Darlinghurst with fortnightly travel to the Moss Vale site.

The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor will assist Garvan to meet legislative requirements relating to WHS to achieve best practice across the Institute.

The Health, Safety & Wellbeing Team is the WHS systems custodian, promoting its functionality, and creating a great user experience by providing support to internal and external stakeholders. This is a full time permanent position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The key responsibilities include:

  • Positively influence, and advise people leaders and workers on health and safety matters, requirements under WHS legislation, and drive forward the agenda for positive health and safety culture in the workplace

  • Provide hands on support in the implementation and day to day management of the Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) at all Garvan work sites, including the review/development of policies and processes

  • Support risk management activities in both lab and non-lab areas

  • Implementing Health, Safety & Wellbeing strategies, training and programs to support health & safety, compliance and effective application in the workplace

  • Assist with the Health & Safety Internal Assurance Reviews process and safety investigations

  • Support Corrective Action processes including the follow up on identified non-conformances, Workplace Inspections and report on outcomes and or system effectiveness

  • Monitor changes to WHS legislation and standards and notify relevant parties regarding changes

  • Partner with stakeholders (including People Leaders & Group Risk Managers) to actively assess and deliver safety outcomes

  • Contribute as an effective team member to enable identified strategies, plans and customer services to be achieved

  • Assist with Injury and Claim Management as required

  • Maintain and assist users with WHS systems and databases

  • All staff are required to comply with Garvan’s workplace polices (as amended from time to time) and especially Garvan’s Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy, including working in accordance with the WHS management system at all times, as safety is Garvan’s number one priority.

ABOUT YOU

The key skills and experience include:

  • Relevant qualifications (certificate, diploma or degree) in WHS.

  • Demonstrated experience in applying WHS principles in a workplace

  • Commitment to best practice in work health and safety

  • Strong knowledge of current WHS legislation and demonstrated ability to keep abreast of environmental changes and updates

  • Ability to confidently work with scientific and professional staff in documenting WHS procedures

  • Excellent written and oral communications

  • Strong customer service ethic and approach

Desirable:

  • RTW Coordinator experience

  • Previous experience within a laboratory, science or research organisation (bio health & safety)

  • Experience managing chemicals and dangerous goods
