About the Team

We are currently seeking two Safety Advisors (STEM) to provide specialist health and safety expertise across the STEM Faculties (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). You will support a coordinated and effective approach to managing health and safety risks across diverse STEM environments and contribute to a proactive, positive safety culture.

These positions offer a mix of strategic and hands‑on work, including risk management, incident response, training delivery and continuous improvement initiatives. You’ll use strong critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills to drive practical, sustainable safety outcomes.

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager, Safety Operations, you’ll work closely with academics, researchers and technical teams to implement and improve safety programs, ensuring compliance with legislation and the UOW Safety Management System.

In this hands‑on advisory role, you will:

  • Partner with Faculties to proactively identify and manage health and safety risks
  • Support incident and hazard management, including investigations and follow‑up actions
  • Deliver training and guidance to staff and students
  • Lead workplace inspections and support audit activities
  • Contribute to developing and implementing WHS policies, procedures and programs

 

You’ll play a key role in influencing safety culture, using sound judgment and problem‑solving skills to support leaders in managing complex teaching and research environments.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualification in a STEM discipline (science, chemistry, engineering or similar) or equivalent experience 
  • WHS qualification (or willingness to obtain, e.g. Cert IV or Diploma) 
  • Experience applying WHS principles, particularly in risk management and safety systems 
  • Strong understanding of WHS legislation, standards and regulatory requirements 
  • Experience developing and implementing WHS programs, policies and procedures 
  • Ability to influence and support a positive safety culture within a complex organisation 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including reporting and data analysis 
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to conduct risk assessments and provide practical recommendations 
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships with a range of stakeholders
